About

Mia Habib (*1980, Houston, Texas) is an Oslo-based dancer, performer and choreographer working at the intersection of performance, exhibitions, publications, lectures, teaching, mentoring and curating always guided by a choreographic logic. Her work is described to hold a culture critical perspective on body, identity, society and dance. She engages in labs and research with a variety of specialists including artists, scientists, political activists and others.
Habib premiered a new commissioned work, Gjallarhorn, (2016) for The Norwegian National Company of Contemporary Dance in Norway, Carte Blanche. In 2015 she premiered A song to… at Dance House in Oslo and the piece have since then among other places been guesting Tanz Im August in Berlin and the Opera stage of Theatre Freiburg. Habib is in A song to… inspired by monumental art and naked bodies with between 30 to 68 bodies on stage. Furthermore, she works on the ongoing project, We Insist, with Jassem Hindi and Rani Nair. They premiere a new project called a stranger within during 2018 at Black Box theatre in Oslo.

The company is fortunate to receive yearly subvention from the Arts Council Norway for productions and operational activity between 2019-2022.

The last years Habib has engaged in research projects and performance projects relating to people with Parkinson’s disease, people with disabilities and people in old age homes, such as the projects Brain Dance (2014) with Monica Gillette, the duet en sang til dere… (2016) and the group piece en sang fra oss… (2016).
She was recently engaged as a dancer for Carte Blanche, The Norwegian National Company of Contemporary Dance.
Habib has among others worked and collaborated with Guilherme Garrido, Julie Nioche, Rani Nair, Jassem Hindi, Brynjar Bandlien, Joanne Leighton, Tommy Noonan, Maija Hirvanen, Monica Gillette, Adva Zakai and Timo Kreuser.
She is one of the initiators of the global artist network Sweet & Tender Collaborations (2007) and a former member of the board of The Norwegian Opera and Ballet. Habib holds an M.A in conflict resolution and mediation from Tel Aviv University (2011) and a B.A. in choreography and dance pedagogy from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (2003).
Her work has amongst other places been presented at: Dance House Oslo, Black Box Theatre Oslo, BIT Teatergarasjen, Theatre Freiburg, Tanz im August, Tanzhaus nrw Dusseldorf, Spielart festival, ULTIMA festival, Aerowaves 2015, Gotheborg Dance and Theatre festival, On Marche festival Marrakech, I’TRÔTRA festival Antananarivo, Keðja Reykjavík.
